So I decided to spend some time between my two playthroughs to go ahead and start breeding a couple different Pokemon I knew I'd need to fill my collection fully. When you're dedicated to breeding and hatching Pokemon, it really doesn't take too much time, especially if you're not picky about stats, natures, and the like. Other people like to breed using Ditto, but when possible I like to go ahead and breed Pokemon with the same kind of Pokemon so that there's no major difference between stats to weaken them.
On my main copy of Pearl I had a pair of Burmy I caught from Honey trees and knew I'd need to breed them to get at least a couple more females to complete my collection, because of the nature of Burmy evolution. Male Burmy evolve into Mothim, a moth-like Bug/Flying-Type Pokemon, while female Burmy evolve into Wormadom, which is where things get interesting. Wormadom, like Burmy, is a bagworm Pokemon which uses it's surroundings to make a coat to protect itself. Wormadom can be one of three different Type combinations depending on the coat Burmy was wearing when it evolved; Bug/Grass, Bug/Ground, and Bug/Steel. Each of the three has different moves they learn for their typing, and are thus needed to get a full Pokemon collection.
On my secondary, old copy of Pearl, I had a couple of extra Eevee I caught at the Trophy Garden, and I knew I needed to breed them to get each of the Eevolutions. As everyone knows, Eevee has many evolutions, with three being from Evolutionary Stones, two being from leveling up in specific areas, two from leveling up with high friendship both during the day AND night, and then the new Fairy-Type that evolves when it levels up when knowing a Fairy-Type move.
I started out by breeding the pair of Eevee, with my preference being that two Pokemon of the same species breed so that the stats that the children inherit be around the same as normal. I know that any Pokemon can breed with a Ditto, but Ditto can have various stats that don't quite mesh with the strengths of the Pokemon it's breeding with, so I'd rather have a Pokemon that inherits the strengths of it's species than that of a random blob like Ditto.
With the Eevee, I put them together in the Day Care Center and rode my bike around waiting for them to breed. It didn't take too long before they had an egg, and it was during their breeding that I realized I could use the Day Care Checker to find out when they laid eggs instead of just constantly checking with the old man.
Eventually I received 8 eggs from the pair, and found an easy path to hatching all of them with the bike. I went into high-speed on the right side of the path in Solaceon Town, going north through a straight path up Route 210, then back south through Solaceon Town and down straight through Route 209, back and forth until I finally got them to hatch. I used some Evolutionary Stones to get Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon, then went to Snowpoint City to evolve one to Glaceon and Eterna Forest to evolve another to Leafeon. I saved the last few to evolve later on when I'm in Pokemon Y.
After hatching and evolving all those Eevee, I went and started breeding the pair of Burmy I have to get all the various evolutions. I went through the same bike route as the Eevee to get a LOT of eggs, a lot more than I realized I was getting, but those two were quite prolific. I realized that all those burmy will be very nice to trade with in Y when I get there, unless of course they've become a lot easier for people to find in later games.
I got around 24 Burmy eggs I've worked to hatch, and I evolved the parents to a Grass/Steel-Type Wormadam and Mothim. I'm still undecided if I want to just get the other two types evolved and call it a collection, or if perhaps I want to take four of their children and train them from the start. I know the parents could be just convenient to have, but then I'd rather raise their children to be more powerful...
I also went ahead and bred a Skarmory, Trapinch, and Torkoal with a Ditto because I had them nicknamed with bold letters (before I switched to normal) and would prefer all the names to be normal. I'm leaving the trio I bred in a separate box with the other Legendary Pokemon I got from the other couple copies of Pearl, to use as my team after I'm all done. I'll get to train their children later on to be as strong as they can be, and I'll have an interesting team in Pearl if I ever need to go back.
Just a few more days before I'm finally done transferring Pokemon over to Pearl from Sapphire, and then I can finally move on with the game. I've been biding my time too long, I want to move on!
