Pokemon SoulSilver - Catching Articuno

I went down the steps in the Seafoam Islands to the icy caves below. I moved some stones and went north to grab a Grip Claw, and then I gave Blake a Cleanse Tag to hold onto so the wild Pokemon would stay away. I made my way through the first level a ways, and found an Ice Heal before I went down a ladder.

I noticed some Trainers hanging around nearby, and I switched over to Samuel before I slid over some ice to confront them. The first, a Skier, had a Delibird, and Samuel took it out with Flame Wheel, then the second, a Snowboarder, sent out a Cloyster. Cloyster used Protect to prevent damage the first time, but the second time it failed and Samuel took it out instantly with Close Combat, then he sent out Dewgong and Seth knocked it out quickly.

I beat a third Trainer, and then moved east to find another ladder going down. I put Blake back in the lead, then continued onward. I found another ladder and went further down, then I found myself in a large cavern with water all around and many large hills jutting out of the water with ladders going up. I found TM13 (Ice Beam) and went back up the ladder.

I looked around the third level and noticed a ladder on the northern part. I had to get past some ice to get there, and I moved a boulder north a couple paces, then used it to slide over to the ladder. I went down to the fourth level and found an Ultra Ball, which reminded me about the amount I had. I hoped I had enough for whatever was down here, but knew it was too late to worry at that point.

I went back up the ladder to the third level, then moved about to go up the ladder on the east side to the second level. I went onto the ice and passed the Snowboarder, then off a ledge to climb up a ladder to the first level. I went down a ladder and found a Water Stone, then went down a ledge and climbed back up the ladder to the first level again.

I got back down to the third level, and I saw some ice blocks on ice. I slid the first south, and the second north, then I pushed the third west to provide a stopping area to move onward. I saw another few ice blocks on a large patch of ice to the north, and a bit further west there was a ladder going down. I moved the ice blocks around a bit, and grabbed a Big Pearl before I went down that western ladder.

I surfed around a bit, and saw Articuno on the central southern landmass. I KNEW something had to be down here. I went up a ladder, then up another ladder, then across a bridge and down another couple ladders. Finally I could surf over to the spot Articuno was waiting at.

I saved my game, then I started the battle with Blake. Blake used Crunch for great damage, then Articuno countered with Ancient Power for minor damage. Blake used Crunch again for great damage, and Articuno was in the yellow before it used Agility to increase it's speed. Articuno hit Blake with Ice Beam for good damage, and he was frozen solid before he could counter.

Blake was frozen solid when he got hit by Ancient Power again, but fortunately I had Ice Heal to unfreeze him before he was hit by Ancient Power again for good damage. Articuno used Agility again to increase it's speed, and then Blake used Ice Fang to push Articuno to the red. Now I could switch to Claire to start attempting the capture.

Claire was sent out, and Articuno used Agility again. Articuno couldn't get it's speed any higher with Agility, and Claire missed with Hypnosis. Articuno hit Claire with Ancient Power for good damage, but Claire managed to hit it with Hypnosis to put it to sleep. The first Ultra Ball did nothing, then the second did a single shake. I tried a Dusk Ball, and it did nothing.

Another Ultra Ball got one shake, and Articuno remained asleep, though I knew it wouldn't be much longer. Another Ultra Ball shook three times, and it looked like I had finished, but Articuno broke out at the last moment. Claire managed to get it back asleep with Hypnosis, and I kept tossing the Ultra Balls to catch it.

Articuno woke up and hit Claire with Ice Beam a couple times, and she went down. I sent out Edward, and kept at it with Pokeballs. Several more Ultra Balls failed as Edward took damage, and when he got to the red I sent out Samuel to take the punishment while I kept trying to catch Articuno.

Samuel kept taking damage, but thanks to his resistance he could last a while against Articuno's attacks. Eventually I ran out of Ultra Balls, and started using my few Dusk Balls. I rant out of them, and tried my few Great Balls next, while Samuel kept taking damage, already in the yellow. When I ran out of Great Balls, I decided to try something else.

I switched to Rayquaza, knowing it's double weakness to Ice would be a problem, but that it's high level was the only way for my Level Balls could have a chance. Immediately after it was sent out Rayquaza took a hit from Ice Beam and received massive damage, already in the yellow. The first failed, and the second looked like it would work but failed after the third shake. I kept trying, but I ran out and had to start using other Pokeballs.

Eventually Articuno ran out of moves, and a single Struggle knocked itself out. I restarted the battle from my previous save, and hoped that I could catch it this time. I decided to try a Quick Ball at the start of the battle, just to see what would happen, and it had a single shake before Articuno broke out.

Blake knocked out Articuno with a critical Waterfall, and I had to try again. Blake weakened Articuno again, then Claire took a pounding before she could put Articuno to sleep with Hypnosis. Eventually Claire went down and I kept at it with Edward, though soon decided to use a Revive to bring Claire back to the battle.

Finally, FINALLY an Ultra Ball managed to catch Articuno right after it woke up. I was glad to have the first of the Legendary Bird Pokemon, and I wondered how difficult it would be to get the others. I used an Escape Rope to get out of the cave, then flew to Viridian City to heal my team and stock up on more Pokeballs.

Soon I'll have the 8th Gym Badge, and I'll be on my way to becoming the Indigo League Champion!
