Pokemon SoulSilver - Catching Zapdos

With my team healed up, I flew to Pallet Town to talk to Professor Oak. Oak handed over HM08 (Rock Climb) as a reward for getting my 8th Gym Badge. Professor Oak was impressed by my skills, and the amount of Gym Badges I had gotten from my adventures in Johto and Kanto. Oak told me that he would make arrangements so that I could go to Mt. Silver, a place too dangerous to the average Trainer. I could reach Mt. Silver from the Pokemon League reception gate.

Before I made my way to Mt. Silver, I knew that the other two Legendary Bird Pokemon were out there somewhere, and I had a good idea where to find one of them. I got myself to Cerulean City and went east to the Power Plant, grabbing a Light Clay and TM91 (Flash Cannon) on my way there. I also grabbed a Mawile (Male, Steel, Lv. 13) on Route 10.

Soon enough I got to the Power Plant, and as I suspected I found Zapdos there waiting for me. With Edward at my side, I confronted Zapdos. Edward hit it with Strength for Great damage, then it countered with Ancient Power for good damage. Edward used Strength again for great damage, and then Zapdos countered with Ancient Power again for good damage. Edward used Thunder Punch next for great damage, and it was a critical hit that knocked out Zapdos.

I reloaded my game, and tried again. Edward used Strength for great damage, then Zapdos countered with Discharge for good damage, and Edward was paralyzed. Zapdos used Discharge again for good damage, then Edward used Thunder Punch for massive damage that dropped Zapdos to the red. With Zapdos in the red, I started using Dusk Balls and Ultra balls to try catching it.

I threw a Dusk Ball and a few Ultra Balls with little luck, but got two shakes before they failed. I had to switch out to Seth, hoping Zapdos didn't have any Flying-type attacks. I kept on with Ultra Balls, then I had to switch to Samuel when Seth took lots of damage, but nothing was working. I got pretty close with a Dusk Ball, but Zapdos broke out and knocked out Samuel.

I sent out Rayquaza next, knowing that it was weak against Electric attacks but hoping that it's level would offer some protection. Rayquaza was getting beat up pretty hard there, and this was yet another time I regretted not having a Ground-type Pokemon on my team. Rayquaza eventually fell, and I sent out Claire, hoping her Hypnosis could help.

Zapdos used Charge to increase it's special defense, and then Claire's Hypnosis missed. Zapdos used Charge again, then Claire hit with Hypnosis, and I tried again to catch it. Ultra Balls were doing nothing even with Zapdos being asleep, and I wondered just how that even worked...

Zapdos woke up and used Discharge, and Claire barely clung on. Zapdos knocked Claire out with Discharge, and I had to send out Blake next. I kept trying to use Ultra Balls and they did nothing, then Blake was hit by Discharge and knocked out. I sent out Seth and he didn't have much health, but he was the only one with any kind of resistance, before he too was knocked out by Discharge.

I just had Edward left, and he wasn't going to last much longer. I used a Hyper Potion to heal Edward, and Zapdos used Charge. I didn't know how much more fight Zapdos had in it before it would run out of PP for it's attacks, so I knew I'd have to catch it soon. I kept using Ultra Balls to minimal effect, and eventually Edward was knocked out and I blacked out.

I reloaded my game and tried yet again, wondering just WHY it was so hard to catch these Legendary Pokemon when they were in the red AND ASLEEP! I don't understand how a Pokemon who's so badly injured and sleeping could resist so strongly.

I got Zapdos to the yellow with one Thunderbolt from Edward, then I used a Dusk Ball with no effect. I sent out Blake, and Zapdos used Ancient Power for good damage. Blake hit Zapdos with Surf for good damage, and it had a sliver of health before hitting Blake with Discharge for massive damage. I would try using my Dusk Balls first before using Ultra Balls to catch it.

Edward was eventually knocked out, and I sent out Claire to fight. She got hit by Ancient Power for massive damage, but then she hit Zapdos with Hypnosis to put it to sleep. I tried using some Ultra Balls with it asleep and running on a sliver of health, but it broke free after two shakes. Next Ultra Ball didn't get a single shake, third one got one shake, fourth didn't get one shake, and fifth was the same before Zapdos woke up and used Charge to increase it's special defense.

Claire used Hypnosis again after Agility failed, and then I tried again. Another Ultra Ball got a few shakes before Claire was hit hard by Discharge. Zapdos avoided Hypnosis, and failed with Agility before Claire used Hypnosis again. I used a Hyper Potion to heal Claire while Zapdos slept, then tried again with more Ultra Balls.

After a while Claire and Seth both went down, and I went through ALL 50 Ultra Balls trying to catch Zapdos. I was getting very frustrated, starting to wonder if I was a fool for using that Master Ball against Latios, wishing that I could somehow purchase more Master Balls for even an exorbitant rate.

Eventually, after a few more tries and a LOT of Ultra Balls, I FINALLY caught Zapdos! I grow worried about how difficult it will be to catch Moltres, and Mewtwo, but at least I have special Pokeballs to catch Groudon!
