Pokemon SoulSilver - Cianwood Gym

I put Lucas to the head of the team, knowing that his Flying-Type attacks would be effective against the Fighting-Type Pokemon this Gym Leader used.

My team consisted of:

Lucas (Pidgeotto, Normal/Flying, Lv. 26)
Claire (Haunter, Ghost/Poison, Lv. 26)
Seth (Weepinbell, Grass/Poison, Lv. 26)
Samuel (Monferno, Fire/Fighting, Lv. 26)
Blake (Croconaw, Water, Lv. 27)
Edward (Elekid, Electric, Lv. 26)

I went in and saw the Gym Leader resting at the bottom of an artificial waterfall, and he was so focused on his training he didn't even notice me. I knew I would have to turn it off in order to fight him, which meant I would have to go through just about every Trainer there. There were two large areas on either side of the waterfall, with four levels and stairs heading up. I took the stairs up the left side, knowing if I was wrong then I'd just have to go up the right side.

I came across my first Trainer, who sent out Hitmonlee, and I sent Lucas against it. Hitmonlee used Meditate to increase it's attack, then Lucas hit it with Gust for great damage. Hitmonlee used Meditate again to raise it's attack further, then Lucas hit it with Gust again for good damage. Hitmonlee used Meditate to raise it's attack even more, then Lucas hit it with another Gust for good damage but it clung on. Lucas finished it off with Quick Attack before it could use that increased attack, and it was knocked out. The battle was won, and I kept heading up the stairs.

I fought against another Trainer who blocked the path to the stairs leading up to the switch, and I knew I'd have to go through the right side too. I sent out Lucas against his Machop, wishing that he knew more than Gust... Lucas used Gust for massive damage, then Machop used Focus Energy to increase it's critical-hit ratio. Lucas used Gust again for massive damage and knocked out Machop, then Machoke was sent out. Lucas fought the Machoke with Gust attacks, and it tried to lower his defense with Leer before it was knocked out, and Lucas grew to Level 27.

Lucas learned Feather Dance in place of Sand-Attack, and then I went down the path to go up the right side instead. I fought against another Black-Belt, and his Hitmonchan went up against Lucas. Hitmonchan used Mach Punch for great damage, then Lucas used Gust for great damage. Lucas used Gust again for great damage, then it countered with Thunder Punch to knock out Lucas. I switched over to Claire, and she used Shadow Ball to knock it out and win the battle.

I left the Gym to heal my team and revive Lucas, and I pondered teaching him Roost before deciding that he just needed to learn a new Flying-Type attack. When I went back to the Cianwood Gym, I realized that the Trainers all went back to their places, so I went up the left side and turned the winch to raise the chute and stop the waterfall. I went to the bottom and finally talked to the Gym Leader.

The Gym Leader, Chuck, was frustrated with me for turning off the waterfall, telling me that I had just spoiled his training. I felt like telling him that being a lazy asshole sitting there wasn't training, but he was angry enough as it was. I did however tell him that his training had nothing to do with Pokemon, then he realized I was right, and invited me to battle him.

I sent out Lucas, and Chuck sent out Primeape. Primape tightened it's focus, and Lucas used Gust for great damage, then it failed it's Focus Punch. Primeape used Double Team to increase it's evasiveness, but Lucas still managed to land Gust for great damage. Primeape tightened it's focus, and Lucas missed with Feather Dance before Focus Punch landed for massive damage, knocking him out instantly.

I sent Claire out against his Primeape, and she used Shadow Ball for massive damage which knocked it out. Claire grew to Level 27, then Poliwrath was sent out against her. Claire used Shadow Ball for great damage, then it countered with Surf for massive damage. I knew that Claire was done with another hit; I had Claire use Destiny Bond to bind with Poliwrath, then it used Surf to knock her out, and it was knocked into unconsciousness with her!

With my latest victory, I received the Storm Badge, which lets me Fly to any city or town I've visited before! He also handed me TM01 (Focus Punch), a somewhat unreliable Fighting-Type move which fails if the Pokemon using it is hit first, but it was obviously a powerful move if it could hit. Chuck told me that he would train 24 hours a day now after my victory over him, and I wondered if I had done a bad thing by beating him like that...

I left the Cianwood Gym and found the woman from earlier talking to me. She saw the Cianwood Gym Badge I had earned, and gave me HM02 (Fly) to train to Lucas. I found out that she was the wife of the Cianwood Gym Leader, who was happy that he would be training harder now since he had been getting chubby. I was glad that she wasn't mad about his promise of 24-hour training now!

I went to the Pokemon Center to heal my team, then I taught Lucas Fly in place of Quick Attack. Finally he had a powerful Flying-Type move, and with it a new ability to travel around the Johto Region. That was two Badges I had earned thanks to Claire and her Destiny Bond, but it was an effective and strategic move even if Claire doesn't like getting knocked out for it to work! I'd have to apologize to her in some way for the amount of times she's achieved victory using that move...
