So, a friend of mine lent me his copy of Pokemon Pearl, over 170 hours through it and most of his Pokemon sent over to Heart Gold. I didn't find many Pokemon in there, other than a shitload of Starlies and Bidoofs, but there WERE some interesting ones including several Burmies and Eevees.
I found out that he had a high-level Ditto at the Pokemon Day Care, and he was using it to breed with a Burmy, and an Eevee. I had done a bit of research on Pokemon Breeding before I really got into all this, and the concept sounds easy enough; you put two Pokemon into the Pokemon Day Care to be cared for and slowly gain experience as you go, and depending on several factors they have a chance at having an egg together. After you get an egg, it's only a matter of taking enough steps with the egg in your party to make it hatch.
Pokemon that you try to breed need to have some similarity to one-another, either with Type, Evolutionary chain, Egg Group, OR with a Ditto. I found out that Ditto can't be bred with another Ditto, but it can be bred with anything else because of it's transformation abilities. If you breed something with a Ditto, you'll get the egg from whatever the Ditto bred with.
There's a LOT of information on the subject of Breeding on Bulbapedia, including stuff about things called "IVs" and such, things I'm sure are meant for the most hardcore Pokemon Trainers and Battlers, but I'm just trying to get a wide variety of Pokemon and with decent stats and varied attacks. I don't know much anything about the most extreme Pokemon Training and stat-building, so I know I wouldn't be the best at figuring out which Pokemon to Breed, but it's a good thing to be able to get a variety of certain Pokemon.
I was curious about why he had so many Burmy eggs, but after doing some research I found out that Burmy is a unique Pokemon, as well as being hard to find. Burmy is a bagworm-like Pokemon that evolves into either a moth-like Pokemon if male, or if female into one of THREE different Type combinations depending on the make of their bag cover. If I'm going to have the best collection of Pokemon, I'm going to need to make sure I have one of each kind, Grass, Steel, and Ground.
The other thing he had several of were Eevees, another special type of Pokemon that can be, through various methods, evolved into one of EIGHT Types. The Eevolutions, as they're called, are valued by many different Trainers for their collections, especially as Eevee is a hard Pokemon to come across normally, and then trying to get every Eevolution requires Evolutionary Stones AND other factors. I've got enough Eevees in his file now to get EACH of the Eevolutions!
Before I had enough Eevees though, I had to breed some. I went ahead and put an Eevee in the Pokemon Day Care with the Ditto so they could breed, and I just rolled around Solaceon Town on my Bike to rush the hatching of a few eggs he already had, each carrying a Burmy, and I was surprised at how quickly I was getting eggs from the pair. I pulled out the Eevee and Ditto after getting several eggs from them, then I just worked on hatching all those eggs.
I think I'm just going to focus on getting through my game, then trading over all these Eevees and Burmies afterward. I'll definitely be bringing over that Ditto for breeding purposes, and make sure that I can get plenty of special Pokemon later on.
