So, the night before I beat the Sinnoh Pokemon League I was informed of an interesting experiment on the streaming gaming website, Twitch. There's a channel called Twitch Plays Pokemon, in which all the people chatting on the channel are in charge of the action in the game, a rom of Pokemon Red. People put in a button press (up, down, left, right, A, B, Start) and a IRC bot logs the commands and inputs them into the rom to play the game.
The link for the stream is here: http://www.twitch.tv/twitchplayspokemon As of this post, the stream has an average of 80,000 people watching, with around 10% inputting commands.
I find it interesting as a concept, with thousands of people trying to guide this one trainer to success, and hundreds of others trying to guide the trainer to utter failure by trolling. This is a real-world example of the Infinite Monkey Theorem, which states one monkey at a typewriter for an infinite amount of time will end up writing Shakespeare. The idea in this endeavor is that thousands of people putting in commands can eventually beat Pokemon Red.
As of this post, the stream has earned 4 Gym Badges, built up a team of semi-varied Pokemon that are mostly under-leveled except for Pidgeot, accidentally released two Pokemon including the Charmeleon starter, intentionally released a Flareon, and have spent over 7 whole days getting where they are now. There's also a new system in place where people now have one of two ways to control the game by voting for either Anarchy (everyone enters commands) or Democracy (most-input command controls the Trainer) on top of inputting commands. Whichever has 75% of the vote is what runs the rom, and it's normally Anarchy unless there's a tough part in which people prefer Democracy.
There's no way something like this could have been done in any genre other than a JRPG like Pokemon, and even then I almost think Pokemon is almost too complex compared to other games of that genre because of things like HMs required for movement and Type strengths/weaknesses in battle. Having said all that, perhaps Pokemon Red was the perfect choice, being a JRPG with only one Pokemon out to battle at a time, whereas standard JRPGs have 3-on-3 battles.
With so many people doing so many things, several memes have already popped up. One of the biggest memes has been the Helix Fossil (used to revive Omanyte) being regularly consulted for advice on how to continue. Players often (accidentally) go to the Items menu and because the Fossil is right near the top the lag causes them to keep trying to "use" it, and they've decided that it is like a god.
Another meme is that Eevee is a false prophet, because it caused the Twitch community to accidentally release those two Pokemon when they tried to put the Eevee into the PC. The thing about Eevee is that the community became galvanized by it, half wanting to evolve it into Vaporeon to learn Surf later, and the other half wanting to evolve it into Jolteon for a wider Type spread, and of course a small portion that didn't want to deal with it at all.
The one bad thing about the TPP streaming is that it's something that you can only watch for a short while before it just gets frustrating. Granted, they're slowly making progress, but at the end of the day you're watching this poor Trainer just twitching about like he's suffering a constant seizure while everyone tries to get him to the next objective.
It's an interesting experiment, but at the end of the day it's not something I'd want to watch except to take occasional glimpses into the cage of monkeys all banging at the one PC between them.

Pokemon Pearl - The Elite Four
I trained my team up to be Level 57 with a lot of hard work and a Rare Candy each. I went between the Pokemon League building and the Veilstone Department Store to get all the healing items I knew I would need. I also did some research on each of the Elite Four members, to be ready to fight them from the start.
My team consisted of:
Lucius (Rapidash, Fire, Lv. 57)
Alexander (Machamp, Fighting, Lv. 57)
Maximus (Luxray, Electric, Lv. 57)
Annabelle (Torterra, Grass/Ground, Lv. 57)
Marcus (Staraptor, Normal/Flying, Lv. 57)
Maria (Gastrodon, Water/Ground, Lv. 57)
I went up to the Ace Trainer watching over the door, who checked my badges to make sure I was ready to take on the Elite Four. After he was satisfied that I had all 8 Sinnoh Region Badges, he let me pass.
The first of the Elite Four was Aaron, a master of Bug-Type Pokemon. Aaron welcomed me, and introduced himself before telling me why he enjoyed Bug-Type Pokemon so much. After formalities were over, we started our battle.
I sent out Lucius, and he sent out Dustox. Lucius used Flamethrower for massive damage, and knocked it out in one blow. Aaron sent out Vespiqueen next, and I kept Lucius in the fight. Lucius used Fire Blast for massive damage, and knocked it out instantly. Another Pokemon down, and also another for the Pokedex. The third Pokemon Aaron sent out was Heracross, and I switched over to Marcus to fight it. Marcus' Intimidate cut it's attack, then he struck it down with Brave Bird on the first move.
The fourth Pokemon sent out was Drapion, and I sent out Maria. Maria's Quick Claw let her strike first with Mud Bomb, and it did massive damage, then Drapion used a Sitrus Berry to heal itself a bit before countering with X-Scissor for good damage. Maria got hit by Ice Fang next for minor damage, then missed her Mud Bomb. Aaron switched out to Beautifly as Maria tried to use Mud Bomb, and of course it didn't affect the Bug/Flying-Type Pokemon. I switched over to Lucius again, who got hit by Psychic for good damage. Lucius used Flamethrower for massive damage, and knocked out Beautifly.
Finally Aaron had to send out Drapion again, and I sent out Maria once more. Maria's Quick Claw let her strike first with Mud Bomb, but she missed, then she got hit by X-Scissor again for good damage. Drapion used Ice Fang again for good damage, and Maria missed with Mud Bomb yet again. Drapion used Ice Fang again for good damage, then Maria used Recover to regain most of her health. Maria tried Mud Bomb again, and hit successfully for massive damage that Drapion barely survived, before countering with X-Scissor for good damage. Aaron used Full Restore to heal it again, and Maria used Mud Bomb again for massive damage and lowered accuracy. Drapion used X-Scissor again for good damage, then Maria finished it off with Mud Bomb.
Aaron accepted defeat, and told me he planned on training hard to get even tougher. I healed my team after the battle, and then I continued onward. I felt a bit frustrated that Maria's Mud Bomb accuracy was so low, and that her misses allowed the battle to last as long as it had, and hoped that I wouldn't need to use an Elixir or Ether for a while.
Next up was Bertha, a Ground-Type master. She asked that I show her how much I learned, and then the battle started.
I sent out Annabelle, and she sent out Quagsire. Quagsire used Protect to defend against Annabelle's Giga Drain for the first move, but the second try hit with no problems and knocked it out in one blow. Whiscash was sent out next, and Annabelle stayed in the fight. I had Annabelle hit it with Wood Hammer for massive damage, and knocked it out instantly. Next up was Sudowoodo and I sent out Alexander, who used Cross Chop for massive damage and another knock-out. Golem was sent out next, and I kept Alexander out to fight. Alexander used Cross Chop for massive damage, and also knocked it out in a single blow! Hippowdon was sent out last, and I sent out Maria to fight it. Maria used Waterfall against it, which brought it down to the red, and then it used Sitrius Berry to heal itself a bit before using Stone Edge against Maria. Maria used Waterfall again, and knocked it out to win the battle!
Bertha had a grin on her face even though I beat her, so very impressed with the skills I showed and the strength of my Pokemon. She liked how my team and I won the battle by working as one, and told me that's what made us so strong.
I healed my team up, and used an Ether to bring Maria's Mud Bomb back up. I kept going on, very pleased with how easily my Pokemon were able to take out the Elite Four so far. I knew that my hours of effort weren't in vain, at least against the Elite Four, but I still had to see what would happen against the champion.
The third member of the Elite Four was Flint, a Fire-Type master. I remembered him from Sunyshore, when he asked me to get Volkner's spirits back up. Volkner told him what I did, and apparently I succeeded in getting him excited about battling once more. Flint told me that he was looking forward to seeing me in battle for doing that, and then the battle began.
I sent out Maria, and he sent out Rapidash. Maria's Quick Claw let her attack first with Waterfall, and it did massive damage to leave Rapidash in the red, and then Rapidash used Sunny Day to increase it's effectiveness. Flint used a Full Restore to heal it again, then Maria used Waterfall once more for great damage. Rapidash used Solar Beam for massive damage, and Maria barely clung on, then she hit Rapidash with Surf for massive damage, leaving it barely conscious. I gave Maria a Full Restore, and then Rapidash used Solar Beam again for massive damage, leaving Maria barely in the fight (I expected him to use a Full Restore too). I gave Maria another Full Restore, and then Rapidash used Solar Beam once more for the knock out. Sunny Day gave out just before I switched to Alexander. Rapidash absorbed light, but then Alexander finished it off with Revenge.
Lopunny was sent out next, and I kept Alexander in the fight. Lopunny used Charm to lower Alexander's attack, then he hit it with Revenge for great damage. Lopunny used Fire Punch for minor damage, and then Alexander's Cross Chop missed. Lopunny used Sunny Day to unleash sunlight, then Cross Chop knocked it out.
Infernape was sent out next, and I switched over to Marcus to fight it, whose Intimidate cut Infernape's attack. Infernape used Flare Blitz for massive damage, then got hit by recoil, before Marcus flew high. Infernape's Mach Punch missed, then Marcus hit it with Fly for an instant knock-out.
I switched over to Annabelle when Steelix was sent out, and Annabelle hit it with Earthquake for great damage, then Steelix used Rock Tomb for minor damage. Annabelle used Earthquake again for great damage, and it barely clung on to use Rock Tomb again. The sunlight faded before Flint used Full Restore to heal it, and Annabelle used Giga Drain for good damage and some healing. Steelix missed with Screech, then Annabelle hit it with Earthquake again for massive damage that knocked it out.
Drifblim was sent out last, and I sent Maximus out against it. Maximus used Crunch against it for massive damage, then it responded with Double Team to increase it's evasiveness. Flint told me how he was heating up from this intense battle, and I was certainly feeling the strain myself. Maximus missed with Spark, and then Drifblim missed with Wil-O-Wisp. Maximus used Spark again, and hit Drifblim for great damage and knocked it out.
The battle was won, and Flint couldn't believe he lost. He said he didn't look down on me, but he didn't consider the possibility that he could lose. He just told me to keep on going, and I healed my team before continued on.
The fourth member of the Elite Four was Lucian, a Psychic-Type master. He told me I had arrived just as he finished reading a book, and then introduced himself. He said I had proven myself to be outstanding by getting that far. He said he was considered the toughest of the Elite Four, and knew he'd have to go all out against me to live up to that reputation.
Lucian sent out Mr. Mime, and I sent out Maximus. Mr. Mime used Psychic for great damage, then Maximus countered with Crunch for massive damage that knocked it out in one blow.
The next Pokemon sent out was Bronzong, and I sent out Lucius to fight it. Lucius used Fire Blast for massive damage, and then Bronzong used a Sitrus Berry to heal itself before using Calm Mind to increase it's special attack and defense. Lucius used Fire Blast again, and managed to knock it out.
Girafarig was sent out next, and I sent Maximus out again. Girafarig used Crunch against Maximus for great damage, a critical hit, but then he countered with Crunch for massive damage, and Girafarig barely clung on. I gave Maximus a Full Restore, and he used Full Restore as well on Girafarig. Girafarig used Psychic for great damage, then Maximus countered with Crunch for massive damage that brought it down to the red, clinging on again. Girafarig used Shadow Ball for good damage, then Maximus used Thunderbolt to knock it out.
Lucian's fourth Pokemon was Alakazam, and I decided to send out Annabelle to fight it. Alakazam's Focus Blast missed, then Annabelle hit it with Wood Hammer for massive damage, bringing it to the red. Lucian used a Full Restore to heal it, and then Annabelle used Giga Drain for good damage and healing. Alakazam used Recover to heal itself, and then Annabelle hit it with Earthquake for massive damage. Alakazam used Energy Ball next for great damage, then Annabelle hit it with Wood Hammer to knock it out.
The last Pokemon Lucian had was Medicham, and I sent out Marcus against it. Marcus' Intimidate cut it's attack, while Lucian was pondering what to do. Marcus hit it with Brave Bird for massive damage, and knocked it out in one blow to finish the battle!
Lucian admired my strength, and congratulated me on beating the Elite Four. He told me that I wasn't done with the Pokemon League though, because I would need to defeat the champion. He warned me that the Champion was far stronger than the Elite Four, and then told me to go through the doorway to my final battle.
I healed my team, and continued to the last challenge of the Sinnoh Pokemon League. I got to the end of a long hallway, and came across none other than Cynthia! The same woman who had been helping me on my travels was also the Champion of the Sinnoh League!
Cynthia asked how I had been, and thanked me for my actions at Mt. Coronet. She observed that I had overcome all obstacles, no matter how difficult, and told me that it means I've triumphed over any personal weakness too. She told me she could feel the power I learned emanating from me, then told me she accepted my challenge.
Cynthia sent out Spiritomb, and I sent out Maria against it. Maria used Waterfall for great damage, and made it flinch. Maria used Surf next for great damage, then it countered with Silver Wind for minor damage. Maria used Waterfall again with Quick Claw for great damage, then got hit by Psychic for good damage. Spiritomb barely clung on, so it was no surprise when Cynthia used a Full Restore on it, then Maria used Waterfall again for massive damage from a critical hit. Maria hit Spiritomb with Surf and it barely clung on, then it used Embargo to stop Maria from using items. Maria used Surf once more, and Spiritomb was knocked out.
I sent out Annabelle against the next Pokemon, Roserade, who used Shadow Ball for great damage, before Annabelle countered with Earthquake for massive damage. Roserade used Energy Ball for massive damage, and knocked out Annabelle, and I had to send out Lucius against it. Lucius used Megahorn for great damage and knocked it out, and then he grew to Level 58. Lucius also learned Flare Blitz in place of Fire Blast.
Next up was Gastrodon, and I sent out Marcus against it. Marcus used Brave Bird for massive damage, and got hurt by recoil, before Gastrodon countered with Muddy Water for massive damage. Marcus used Close Combat to knock out Gastrodon before it could attack again.
Cynthia sent out her fourth Pokemon, Milotic, and I sent out Maximus against it. Maximus used Spark for great damage, and it ended up paralyzed as well, before Milotic countered with Ice Beam for great damage. Maximus used Thunderbolt next for great damage, and Milotic used Mirror Coat for massive damage that knocked out Maximus. I switched to Alexander, then used Revive on Annabelle, while Cynthia used a Full Restore on Milotic. I used another Revive on Maximus, then Milotic used Surf for massive damage. I switched over to Annabelle again, and she was hit by Ice Beam to be knocked out again. I sent out Maximus once more, and he used Spark for massive damage, then Milotic used Surf for great damage that knocked Maximus out again. I sent out Alexander again, and Milotic used Aqua Ring before Alexander hit it with Cross Chop for massive damage and knocked it out.
Alexander grew to Level 58, and then I sent out Lucius against her Lucario. Lucario used Dragon Pulse for great damage, then Lucius countered with Flare Blitz for massive damage and the knock-out!
The final Pokemon in Cynthia's team was Garchomp, and I switched over to Maria. Cynthia told me she couldn't remember the last time she was put into a corner like that. Maria's Quick Claw let her strike first with Waterfall, and it did good damage, then Garchomp used Giga Impact for massive damage. I used a Max Revive on Annabelle, and then Garchomp had to recharge from it's attack. Garchomp used Giga Impact again, and knocked Maria out.
I sent out Annabelle against it, and Garchomp could do nothing but recharge while Annabelle hit it with Wood Hammer for great damage, then it used a Sitrus Berry to heal itself a bit. Garchomp used Giga Impact for massive damage, before Annabelle used Giga Drain to do good damage and heal up. Annabelle hit Garchomp with Wood Hammer again for great damage, and then Cynthia used Full Restore on it before Annabelle used Giga Drain again for good damage. I used my other Max Revive on Maria, and Garchomp used Dragon Rush on Annabelle for massive damage, knocking her out again. Maria was sent out next, and Garchomp used Dragon Rush for massive damage, before Maria countered with Surf for great damage. I used a Full Restore on Marcus, then Garchomp used Giga Impact for massive damage that knocked out Maria.
I sent out Marcus next, and his Intimidate cut Garchomp's attack. Garchomp could do nothing as Marcus hit it with Close Combat for massive damage, and it barely clung on. Garchomp tried to use Dragon Rush again, but missed, leaving itself open for Marcus to use Brave Bird and knock it out! Marcus grew to Level 58, and I cheered with joy and relief as I beat Cynthia!
Cynthia was stunned, saying how I had become not just the strongest challenger, but also the strongest Trainer! After the battle, she complimented me on an outstanding battle, recognizing that I had given my Pokemon the support they needed to maximize their power. She admired my passion and calculating coolness, and told me she believed that my Pokemon and I could overcome any challenge.
I went up a lift behind her, and through another door, then down a long hallway. Cynthia met me at the doorway, telling me that the room ahead was the Hall of Fame. Professor Rowan came up right after, telling me he enjoyed the battle against Cynthia. Cynthia was surprised to see him there, and he responded that it was only natural to witness my crowning glory after sending me out to fill the Pokedex.
Professor Rowan realized he shouldn't call me a child anymore, and that I've grown into a real Champion. Cynthia noticed how Rowan still enjoyed the enthusiasm that kids bring to his research, then told me to step into the Hall of Fame. We all headed inside, and Rowan realized the last time he had been in there was when Cynthia had become champion. They welcomed me into the Hall of Fame, and I placed my Pokeballs onto the machine to have my team registered as Champions.
It felt good seeing myself and my whole team up there on the screen, and I knew I had earned this victory. I was glad to have finally made it through all those Trainers, the Gym Leaders, all the challenges behind me to be here, as Champion of the Sinnoh Region. As I watched the credits roll, I wondered how many more battles would be ahead of me, in the Sinnoh Region and beyond.

Pokemon Pearl - Training for the Elite Four
I knew I had a lot of training to do, what with the Elite Four being at least 5 levels higher than my team, and even 10 levels or more above. I was determined to get my team to around Level 57 before I'd go up against the Elite Four. Luckily for me, I had a few days off of work to train my Pokemon.
I started by going to the Seven Stars Hotel, getting into Double Battles there each day I was training so I could build up two Pokemon at once, even if slower than going through tougher areas. It had the bonus effect of making me lots of money I would be using to buy healing items such as Revives and Full Restores to fight the Elite Four. A few of my Pokemon gained levels during the battles there.
I used the VS Seeker along Route 222 and Route 223, fighting the Sailors and Fishermen along the former Route while I battled against many swimmers along the latter, as well as wild Pokemon on both. It was good training for Annabelle and Maximus with the amount of Water-Type Pokemon, both trained and wild along Route 223.
I also went through Victory Road near both entrance and exit, and I battled many wild Pokemon in there for good experience. Many of my Pokemon could do quite well in there against the wild Pokemon, but admittedly Maximus and Lucius didn't have the best of luck there, what with the Rock/Ground-Types in abundance.
Through all the training, Annabelle learned Giga Drain in place of Mega Drain when she grew to Level 51, and Marcus learned Brave Bird in place of Take Down at Level 49. I also taught Maximus Thunderbolt in place of Flash, knowing that another Electric-Type attack would be useful to him.
Still quite a bit of training to do, but my Pokemon are just getting stronger and stronger. I know that soon my team will be powerful enough to fight the Elite Four, and win.

Pokemon Pearl - Battling Simon at the Pokemon League
I came out of Victory Road, with a small path going north toward a pond and a large waterfall. I Surfed up the waterfall on Maria, and just past the top of the waterfall there stood the Pokemon League building, a cathedral-like structure where one would be more likely to pray than to battle the Elite Four.
After taking it in a while, I went inside. There were a couple people inside, and on the left side it had a Pokemon Center while the right side it had a Poke' Mart. I went over to the nurse and got my Pokemon healed up, and I talked to a nearby Ace Trainer who admired how calm and relaxed my Pokemon were even though we were about to go up against the Elite Four.
I decided to go and talk to the other Ace Trainer who was guarding the entrance to the Elite Four, but before I could talk to him Simon ran up behind me, warning me not to go off without him. I turned around, and he told me he was here to challenge the Elite Four just like I was. Simon wanted to find out which of us was more worthy of making the challenge with a battle, and so started our final battle.
My team consisted of:
Alexander (Machamp, Fighting, Lv. 48)
Maria (Gastrodon, Water/Ground, Lv. 48)
Annabelle (Torterra, Grass/Ground, Lv. 48)
Lucius (Rapidash, Fire, Lv. 48)
Maximus (Luxray, Electric, Lv. 48)
Marcus (Staraptor, Normal/Flying, Lv. 48)
I sent out Alexander, and he sent out Staraptor. I switched over to Maximus, who got hit by U-Turn for good damage, and then the move caused Staraptor to switch out with Snorlax instead. Maximus hit Snorlax with Crunch for good damage, then he got hit by Body Slam for massive damage. I switched out to Alexander, and he got hit by Earthquake for great damage. Alexander used Cross Chop for massive damage, and knocked out Snorlax instantly.
Next was Staraptor, and I switched over to Maximus. I used Full Restore on Maximus to heal from the great damage he took, and then Staraptor used U-Turn again, this time switching out with Heracross. I switched out to Lucius, who got hit by Aerial Ace for good damage. Heracross used Rock Slide for massive damage, but Lucius clung on and then flinched from the attack. I had to switch out to Marcus, who lowered it's attack with Intimidate before it used Night Slash for good damage. Marcus flew high, ready to strike it down, and Heracross missed with Close Combat before it got hit by Fly for an instant knock-out.
Next up was Floatzel, and I sent out Maximus again. Floatzel used Crunch for good damage, and then Maximus countered with Spark for massive damage, and Floatzel was knocked out in a single blow. I was glad that at least one of Simon's Pokemon went down so easily.
I kept Maximus in the fight against Staraptor as it was sent out, and Staraptor used Close Combat for great damage that knocked out Maximus. I decided to fight it with Marcus, whose Intimidate cut it's attack. Marcus hit it with Take Down for massive damage, and managed to knock out Simon's Staraptor with ease.
Next up was Infernape, and I sent out Maria against it. Infernape used Flamethrower against Maria for good damage, then she countered with Waterfall for massive damage. Infernape was in the yellow, and Simon switched out for Roserade. Maria hit it with Mud Bomb for good damage when it switched in, then I switched over to Alexander. Roserade used Shadow Ball for good damage, then Alexander countered with Cross Chop for great damage. Roserade used Giga Drain for great damage, then Alexander used Rock Smash for good damage. I switched over to Annabelle, who got hit by Grass Whistle and fell asleep.
I used Awakening to wake Annabelle up, then Roserade used Giga Drain for good damage. Roserade used Giga Drain again for good damage, and then Annabelle hit it with Wood Hammer for good damage. I switched over to Marcus, who cut it's attack, and then Roserade used Grass Whistle to put him to sleep. I used Awakening to wake Marcus up, and then Roserade used Poison Jab for good damage and also poisoned Marcus. Marcus missed with Take Down, and got hit by another Poison Jab that knocked him out. I was getting irritated at my whole team going down by this one Pokemon, and I switched over to Annabelle again. Roserade used Giga Drain again for good damage, then Annabelle countered with Earthquake for great damage and finally knocked it out.
Finally Infernape was sent out again, and I sent out Maria. Both our teams were nearly wiped out, but Simon had faith in his final Pokemon. I had faith in my team, and I knew Maria could do it. Infernape used Focus Blast for great damage, then Maria countered with Surf for great damage, which knocked out Infernape and won the battle!
After the battle, Simon decided he wasn't ready for the Pokemon League if he lost to me. He told me to watch though, that he'd get tougher and win his way through the Pokemon League. He promised me that he would become the champion, the toughest Trainer. Before he left, he told me I had better not lose to anyone before him, and I promised I wouldn't allow that.
As I healed my team again, I knew that I needed training too. If I had such a hard time against Simon's team, I knew that the Elite Four would wipe me out easily. I need to spend time training my Pokemon, strengthening them further. Only after getting even stronger will I stand a chance against the Elite Four.

Pokemon Pearl - The long journey through Victory Road
I did a lot of shopping after I made sure I could fly back to the entrance of Victory Road, and I grabbed a bunch of Fresh Water bottles, Antidotes, Awakenings, and also some Burn Heals and Ice Heals. I did a bit of training while I was on the mainland, and Annabelle grew to Level 47.
After I flew back to the entrance to Victory Road, prepared for anything, I went inside. I found a complex cavern with several levels in one large room, and I went across a couple bridges and started down a level below before encountering a wild Medicham, just one Level lower than my team. Alexander knocked it out after getting badly injured, and I knew I'd have my work cut out for me...
I healed Alexander and continued down, then went north to fight a Bird Keeper. I sent out Alexander, and she sent out Noctowl. I switched out to Maximus, knowing Alexander would be taken out instantly, and Maximus got hit with Take Down for great damage. Maximus hit Noctowl with Spark for massive damage, knocking it out in one blow, and then Staraptor was sent out. Staraptor's Intimidate cut Maximus' attack, and then he got hit by Aerial Ace for good damage before countering with Spark for massive damage and also paralysis. Maximus then used Strength for good damage, while Staraptor used Agility to increase it's speed. Maximus used Crunch to knock it out and win the battle, and then I continued north.
I decided before continuing north to go back and down with Rock Climb to fight another Trainer. Alexander was sent out, and they sent out Haunter. I had to switch over to Maximus, and he got hit by Shadow Ball for great damage, but then Maximus hit Haunter with Crunch for massive damage that knocked it out. Alexander grew to Level 47, and Gengar was sent out. Gengar used Dark Pulse for good damage, then Maximus countered with Crunch for an instant knock-out. Alakazam was sent out next, and it used Psychic for great damage that knocked out Maximus. I switched over to Lucius, and Alakazam's Trick failed before it got hit by Megahorn for massive damage that took it out.
I revived and healed Maximus, then I continued exploring the bottom level. While exploring, I found TM41 (Torment) and found I couldn't do much more exploring, so I went back up and continued north. I went down a couple levels with Rock Climb, and then encountered an Ace Trainer. I sent out Marcus, and she sent out Golduck. Marcus' Intimidate cut it's attack, then he used Take Down for massive damage, and got hit by recoil, before Golduck used Confusion for good damage. Marcus used Take Down again to knock it out, and then Blissey was sent out. Marcus used Close Combat for massive damage and knocked it out in one blow, thus winning the battle. Marcus grew to Level 47, and I continued on.
After encountering a Steelix and taking it out with Marcus, who suffered great injury against it, I decided to start using the Super Repels I had stored up from catching Mesprit. I would be relying on the wild Pokemon to train my team soon enough, but for the moment I needed them ready to fight Trainers. I found a Max Elixir, then I went west up to the 2nd floor, a cavern filled with large rocks and boulders to crush and move.
I did exploring around the area, and encountered another Ace Trainer. Rapidash was sent out, and I sent out Marcus, who cut it's attack with Intimidate. Marcus Flew up high, avoiding Rapidash's growl, then he hit it with Fly for massive damage to knock it out. Next up was Rampardos, and I sent out Maria. Maria used Surf for massive damage, and she knocked it out instantly. Finally the Ace Trainer sent out Carnivine, to which I responded with Lucius. Lucius used Flamethrower for massive damage, knocking it out before he grew to Level 47.
I encountered a couple wild Pokemon even with Super Repel, and Maria took them out to grow to Level 47. I tried making it through the maze of rocks and boulders, but found I just got stuck, so I went back east to the main room. I did a bit more exploring in the main cavern, where I found a Full Heal before I realized I needed to continue through that 2nd floor if I wanted to get to the end.
I went back to the 2nd floor west cavern, messed up the rock/boulder movements again, started my way out and had Annabelle get knocked out alongside the Kadabra it was fighting against, so I had to revive her and heal her up before getting out of there. I went back in to try again, reading through Bulbapedia's guide for it, but found quickly that I couldn't make it through how they described. I ended up consulting Youtube, and found that the one spot I had previously messed up was where I needed to go.
I went south on the 2nd floor to this formation, moving a couple boulders and crushing another rock, before making it to another Trainer. I sent out Annabelle against her Clefable, and had her use Earthquake for great damage before it countered with Gravity, an attack I've never seen before. Gravity was said to have increased, but I had no idea what that meant. Annabelle used Wood Hammer again for great damage that knocked out Clefable, and then I switched to Marcus to fight her Torterra. I tried having Marcus use Fly, but then was told he couldn't because of Gravity, and I realized that I couldn't fight Torterra with Flying-Type attacks. I had Marcus use Close Combat for great damage, then he got hit by Earthquake, a Ground-Type attack that would normally never touch a Flying-Type Pokemon, bringing Marcus to the red. I switched to Lucius, and he got hit by Crunch for good damage. Lucius used Fire Blast for massive damage that knocked out Torterra and won the battle.
I healed my team and continued on, wondering just how much longer before I'd have to turn back and get MORE healing items and Repels... I came across a few boulders, moving them about to find a Veteran. Maximus took out his Staraptor easily, and then Maria knocked out his Hippowdon with a couple Waterfalls. I went past him back down to the 1st floor, then went back up to the 2nd floor to move the boulders before the Veteran, and I was able to move east to find a Full Restore, and a couple more Trainers. I got into a Double Battle, the two Ace Trainers sent out Staraptor and Whiscash, while I sent out Annabelle and Lucius. Lucius used Fire Blast against Staraptor for an instant knock-out, then Annabelle hit Whiscash with Wood Hammer for another instant knock-out. Annabelle grew to Level 48, and the battle was won.
I went past the two Ace Trainers on a bike to find TM71 (Stone Edge) before I went back down to the 1st floor. I healed my team and then continued on the 1st floor lower level. I fought against another Trainer along the bottom level, and I sent out Lucius against his Machamp. Lucius used Fire Blast for massive damage and it also caused a burn, before it countered with Wake-Up Slap for massive damage. Lucius knocked it out with Flamethrower, and then I won the battle. I healed up Lucius before continuing east.
I went down further and found a basement area, and lots of water. I surfed north and encountered another Trainer, whose Chingling and Chimecho both went down easily against Lucius, and Lucius grew to Level 48. I explored east, and encountered another Trainer whose Honchkrow went down against a single Spark from Maximus, and Maximus grew to Level 48. I went south from where I encountered the previous Trainer, and came across another couple Ace Trainers in a Double Battle. They sent out Medicham and Gyarados, while I sent out Maria and Alexander. Maria and Alexander did some good damage, but Maria got hurt and I had to switch out for Marcus. The battle was won after some effort, and Marcus grew to Level 48 before I went north.
I went up a waterfall and encountered another Trainer, defeated his Gabite, and kept onward. I found TM59 (Dragon Pulse) and then found my way back to the 1st floor. I encountered a Veteran, and he wanted to fight. I had Maria fight against his Tentacruel, and she grew to Level 48. I sent out Alexander against his Golem, and Alexander knocked it out after suffering some great injury. I kept Alexander out to fight his Empoleon, and Cross Chop knocked it out in one blow, winning the battle.
I found a Razor Claw to the west, then I went up a level and across a bridge to grab a Zinc, and encountered a big guy guarding a hole to another cavern. I talked to him and he told me that I would become even tougher, that I would meet many Pokemon, and that eventually the world would grow bigger for me. I had to assume I couldn't get through until at least beating the Elite Four. I went around and up one area to find TM79 (Dark Pulse) then went back and headed up another way.
I went up another area, and before a bridge I fought against yet another Trainer, a Dragon Tamer, but I knew I would be out of here soon. Alexander took out both of his Gibles with Cross Chop, and grew to Level 48, then I switched over to Maximus to knock out his Gyarados. I went across the bridge, and finally got out of Victory Road.
I just had to get up a waterfall and to the Pokemon League building. I healed my team up and got ready to go. So close to the league, and yet so far... My Pokemon need lots of training before they're truly ready for the challenge ahead!

Pokemon Pearl - Surfing to the Pokemon League!
I decided to do a bit of training along the shore east of Sunyshore City, as well as at the Seven Stars Restaurant, and Marcus grew to Level 45, while Annabelle and Maximus both grew to Level 46. I also continued at the Honey Trees, and managed to catch another Burmy (Bug, Male, Lv. 9) that I plan on using to breed with the first Burmy and get the full set of evolutions/types. I also taught Maria Waterfall in place of Water Pulse.
After all that, I went back to Sunyshore City and headed to the northern beach, and then I started surfing north. I fought a wild Tentacruel just a short distance from the beach, and Alexander grew to Level 46 after beating it. I kept on northward and came across a Swimmer. I sent out Marcus, and she sent out Lumineon. Marcus used Close Combat for massive damage, then Lumineon used Captivate to lower Marcus' special attack. Marcus finished the battle off with Take Down, and afterwards he grew to Level 46.
I came across another Swimmer north of the first, and she sent out Azurill while I sent out Maria. Maria used Body Slam for massive damage, bringing Azurill to the red, and then it countered with Bubble Beam for minor damage. Maria's Quick Claw allowed her to hit it first with Body Slam again for the knock out, then Azumarill was sent out. Maria used Body Slam against it for great damage, then it countered with Double-Edge for good damage and recoil. I had Maria use Waterfall next, which did great damage, and then Azumarill used Aqua Ring to heal itself turn by turn. I knew I had to knock it out quickly, so I had Maria use Body Slam again for good damage and paralysis, but it clung on, then it countered with Double-Edge for good damage before being knocked out by the recoil.
I kept on going north and came across another Swimmer. I sent out Maria against his Mantyke, and Maria's Body Slam knocked it out in one blow. Next up was Remoraid, and I kept Maria in the fight. Maria used Body Slam for massive damage that knocked out Remoraid in one blow, and then Mantine was sent out last. I decided to switch over to Lucius, even with it's weakness to Water-Types, and he got hit by Water Pulse for great damage. Lucius used Megahorn on it for great damage, then got hit by Confuse Ray and was confused. Lucius was confused, and hurt himself in his confusion, before getting hit by Water Pulse for great damage. I switched over to Maria again and had her use Body Slam for great damage, then Mantine sprang up. Maria tried to use Surf but it missed, then Mantine tried to use Bounce but it missed. Maria finally won the battle with Waterfall to knock it out.
I healed my Pokemon up before continuing on, encountering a pair of Swimmers who pulled me into a Double Battle. They sent out Wingull and Marill, while I sent out Maria and Annabelle. I had Annabelle use Wood Hammer on Wingull and knock it out, then Maria used Body Slam on Marill for massive damage, and it countered with Aqua Jet for minor damage against Maria. Quagsire was sent out next, and I had Annabelle hit it with Mega Drain for massive damage to knock it out and heal from the recoil, and Maria grew to Level 46. Maria finished off Marill with Waterfall, and then Pelipper and Golduck were both sent out. Maria's Quick Claw let her strike first with Waterfall against Golduck for great damage, then Annabelle hit Pelipper with Wood Hammer for massive damage. Golduck flinched from Waterfall, then Pelipper used Stockpile for 1 level, readying to use Spit Up or Swallow. Annabelle used Cut against Pelipper for good damage, then Golduck hit Maria with Water Pulse for good damage, and Maria used Body Slam for good damage against Golduck while Pelipper used Roost to heal up. I had Annabelle use Wood Hammer for massive damage against Pelipper, then Golduck missed it's attack before being knocked out by Maria's Body Slam, and then Pelipper used Spit Up for good damage against Maria. Wingull was sent out, and Maria used Waterfall against it for massive damage which knocked it out instantly, then Annabelle finished off Pelipper with Cut. The battle was won, and I kept on going north.
I was about halfway there before coming across another Swimmer, and her team went down easily against Lucius. I found the halfway point, a small island with shallow water surrounding it, and I found a Pearl before coming across a Sailor who wanted to fight. I beat his Pokemon easily, and Lucius grew to Level 46. I kept on going, finding yet another Swimmer who wanted to fight, and her Golduck was knocked out quickly by Maximus. Another Swimmer north of her, and her team also went down easily again Maximus too.
I decided to halt my progress for a bit, even as close as I was to reaching the Pokemon League, so I could catch a new Water-Type Pokemon. Bulbapedia said that there was a 10% chance of finding it along the route, but it felt a lot more like 1% as I kept encountering Tentacruel and Pelipper, though at least Maximus grew to Level 47. Finally I came across Mantyke (Water/Flying, Male, Lv. 39) and had Annabelle bring it to the red, then I had to use several Net Balls before I finally caught it!
I had to fight against yet another Swimmer along the path, he sent out Gyarados while I sent out Annabelle. She used Mega Drain for minor damage, then it countered with Ice Fang for massive damage that knocked out Annabelle. I switched over to Marcus, who used Take Down for massive damage and brought it to the red, then it countered with Hydro Pump for massive damage. Marcus missed with Take Down, then he got hit by Hydro Pump for great damage. I had Marcus attack with Close Combat, and I won the battle.
I went north and finally found a waterfall, and after I had Maria climb us up there I found a Pokemon Center, and just east of it there was the entrance to Victory Road, though really it's more like Treacherous Cavern with all the strong wild Pokemon and Trainers.
I healed my Pokemon up, ready to fly back to Sunyshore City to buy some supplies, then work my way through Victory Road. I think it'll be interesting to see what challenges await!

Pokemon Pearl - Sunyshore Gym
Before taking on the Sunyshore Gym, I went ahead and did some training against one of the Fisherman on the path west of Sunyshore, and at the Seven Stars Restaurant, and for my efforts Lucius grew to Level 44, while Alexander and Annabelle grew to Level 45! I also checked a couple trees I lathered with Honey, and one of them shook with a Cherubi (Grass, Female, Lv. 13) which I caught for my collection.
My team consisted of:
Lucius (Rapidash, Fire, Lv. 44)
Marcus (Staraptor, Normal/Flying, Lv. 44)
Maria (Gastrodon, Water/Ground, Lv. 44)
Alexander (Machamp, Fighting, Lv. 45)
Annabelle (Torterra, Grass/Ground, Lv. 45)
Maximus (Luxray, Electric, Lv. 45)
When I went inside, I found myself on a platform standing above lots of machinery, next to massive gears with paths protected by guardrails. It was pretty obvious that the Gym Leader, Volkner, is focused on Electric-Type Pokemon.
The first room had 3 gears dividing the room in half. I walked over onto the center gear, was forced to turn right onto a big green button that spun the gears around, and then found myself turned back around on the platform. The first and second gear had turned so their paths combined, so I went onto the middle gear again and turned left onto a green button that spun the gears again and led me to the platform ahead.
I came across a Trainer just before the doorway to the next room, and we battled. She sent out Pachirisu, and I sent out Lucius against it. Lucius used Fire blast for massive damage, which brought it to the red and caused a burn, then it countered with Discharge for good damage, and after that the burn finished it off. I won the battle and continued on my way.
The next room was more complex, with a couple different platforms with stairs leading to smaller platforms, and several gears both normal AND vertical. I went on the gear to the left, onto a blue button that spun the gears around but otherwise got me nowhere. I went to the gear on the right that led me to another trainer and a set of stairs. I battled the Trainer with Maria, and she won against his Luxio with one Mud Bomb.
I went up the stairs next to him and found myself at a dead end. in front of a pair of vertical gears. I went back to the first gear to spin things around and found that I could go over to another platform with the vertical gears on the left, going up the stairs and across the platform those gears spun to reveal, then back down to fight another young Trainer. He sent out Mr. Mime while I sent out Maria. Maria used Body Slam for great damage and paralyzed Mr. Mime, who afterward couldn't attack because of paralysis. Another Body Slam knocked it out, and the battle was won.
I moved onto the gear past the boy, and the blue button in the center spun the gear around, then I moved across the platform onto the next one, the green button on it spinning things around so I could go down to the first trainer and past the stairs next to him. I fought another young Trainer at the top platform leading to the next room, and her team of Pikachu went down easily against Maria (for 1) and Lucius (against the other 3).
The next room, and what I assumed must be the last, was huge, and very complex with many gears all over. I fought a Guitarist near some stairs, and his Raichu went down against Lucius' strength, though I had to heal Lucius before moving on. I went on the middle gear that led me to the gear on the right, and stepping on the red button caused all three gears to spin about. I went over to the gear on the left after and was spun around to go down to a separate platform with stairs going to a platform ahead.
I fought another Trainer before going up those stairs, and Lucius grew to Level 45 before I went up the stairs and onto the next platform. The upper level of this room was even more complex than the lower level, with several more gears. I fought another Guitarist at the top of the stairs, and upon victory Maria grew to Level 45. It took me a bit to figure out the 6 gears here, then I moved over to another platform that went down, past another Trainer I beat quickly.
Finally I reached Volkner, who told me that it wasn't often he was challenged by Trainers. In all honesty, it doesn't surprise me seeing how he's modified his Gym so extensively... He told me all those battles were boring, and he didn't even break a sweat. He formally introduced himself, then said we'd better get this done. Volkner hoped that I could make him remember how fun it is to battle.
The first Pokemon Volkner sent out was Raichu, and I sent out Annabelle. Raichu used Brick Break for good damage against Annabelle, who countered with Earthquake for massive damage that knocked it out instantly.
The next Pokemon sent out was Octillery, and I sent out Maximus to fight it. Maximus used Spark for massive damage that took it out instantly before it could do anything.
The third Pokemon was Luxray, and I sent out Maria against it. Luxray used Crunch for good damage, then Maria tried to counter with Mud Bomb but missed. Luxray used Crunch again for great damage, then Maria hit it with Mud Bomb for great damage. Luxray tried to use Crunch again but missed, then Maria hit it with Mud Bomb for great damage, but Luxray hung on and ate a Sitrus berry to regain health. Luxray used Crunch again for great damage that brought Maria to the red, then Maria countered with Body Slam for good damage. I had to switch out to Annabelle while Luxray got healed by Full Restore. I had Annabelle use Earthquake for massive damage that brought Luxray to the red, then it countered with Crunch for great damage. Annabelle finally finished Luxray off with Wood Hammer.
The last Pokemon Volkner sent out was Ambipom, and I sent out Alexander to counter it. Ambipom used Agility to raise it's speed, then Alexander hit it with Revenge for massive damage, and knocked it out in a single blow!
With all his Pokemon defeated, Volkner started to laugh. He told me that it had been the most fun he's ever had in a battle, and that he was also excited to know that my team and I would keep battling to greater heights. Volkner handed me the Beacon Badge, which lets me use Waterfall outside of battle, though I hadn't found the HM yet. The Beacon Badge also allows me to control all Pokemon, no matter the level. Volkner also handed over TM57 (Charge Beam) which may raise special attack if it lands.
I made my way out of the Gym, remembering what that Gym Leader at the beach said, and when I talked to her she handed over HM07 (Waterfall) before wishing me luck against the Pokemon League.
I've got all 8 Gym Badges for the Sinnoh League now. It's just a matter of getting through Victory Road, training my Pokemon, and beating the Elite Four!
